What Is Heeramandi
Heera Mandi, also known as Shahi Mohallah, is a neighborhood and market situated within the Walled City of Lahore, Pakistan. Originally named ‘Hira Singh Di Mandi’, meaning Hira Singh’s food grain market, it later evolved into the modern name Heera Mandi. Located near the Taxali Gate and south of the Badshahi Mosque, Heera Mandi has historically been recognized as Lahore’s red-light district.
- Heera Mandi’s history traces back to the 15th and 16th centuries, functioning as Lahore’s central hub for its sophisticated tawaif culture.
- Tradition holds that Heera Mandi was founded by Dhian Singh Dogra, son of Heera Singh and Prime Minister to Maharaja Ranjit Singh.
- Initially, it thrived as a focal point for Lahore’s tawaif culture, where women from Afghanistan and Uzbekistan performed classical Indian dances such as Kathak to entertain the Mughal elite.
- Association with Prostitution:
- Originated during Ahmad Shah Abdali’s invasion when troops set up brothels with captured women.
- Reputation solidified during British colonial rule, establishing Heera Mandi as a hub for prostitution.
- Cultural Hub:
- Despite its association with prostitution, Heera Mandi also served as a cultural hub.
- Women and transgender individuals offered traditional and classical dances, adding to the area’s cultural significance.
Over time, Heera Mandi has transformed during the day into a typical Pakistani bazaar, known for its culinary delights, traditional footwear (Khussa), and shops selling musical instruments and dance paraphernalia. However, at night, the brothels above the shops open, continuing the area’s association with prostitution.
Despite efforts to curb prostitution, such as operations conducted during Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq’s reign, and the rise of online escort services, Heera Mandi retains its reputation as a red-light district. However, the practice in the neighborhood is said to be in decline in recent years.
